Gravitational Collapse: The Story so far

چکیده

An outstanding problem in gravitation theory and relativistic astrophysics today is to understand the final outcome of an endless gravitational collapse. Such a continual collapse would take place when stars more massive than few times the mass of the sun collapse under their own gravity on exhausting their nuclear fuel. According to the general theory of relativity, this results either in a black hole, or a naked singularitywhich can communicate with faraway observers in the universe. While black holes are (almost) being detected and are increasingly used to model high energy astrophysical phenomena, naked singularities have turned into a topic of active discussion, aimed at understanding their structure and implications. Recent developments here are reviewed, indicating future directions.

Assessment of Near-Fault Ground Motion Effects on the Fragility Curves of Tall Steel Moment Resisting Frames

Nowadays it is common to use the fragility curves in probabilistic methods to determine the collapse probability resulting from an earthquake. The uncertainties exist in intensity and frequency content of the earthquake records are considered as the most effective parameters in developing the fragility curves. The pulse-type records reported in the near-fault regions might lead to the major dam...

Naked singularity formation for higher dimensional inhomogeneous dust collapse

The Cosmic Censorship Conjecture (CCC)[1,2] states that the space-time singularity produced by gravitational collapse must be covered by the horizon. The CCC is yet one of the unresolved problem in General Relativity. In fact the conjecture has not yet any precise mathematical proof. However the singularity theorems as such do not state anything about the visibility of the singularity to an out...

High-Order Contamination in the Tail of Gravitational Collapse

It is well known that the late-time behaviour of gravitational collapse is dominated by an inverse power-law decaying tail. We calculate higher-order corrections to this power-law behaviour in a spherically symmetric gravitational collapse. The dominant “contamination” is shown to die off at late times asM2t−4 ln(t/M). This decay rate is much slower than has been considered so far. It implies, ...

Probability Assessment and Risk Management of Progressive Collapse in Strategic Buildings Facing Blast Loads

Nowadays, as a result of increased terrorist and bomb attacks throughout the globe in the vicinity of strategic buildings, designing these structures against impact loads, particularly the blast-related ones, has been taken into more consideration. The current procedure for designing the structure against an explosion is a design against the local failure of the current elements in the first st...

A naturalness argument for covered and naked singularities in gravitational collapse

We give a naturalness argument to show that both covered and naked singularities should occur generically in spherical gravitational collapse in classical general relativity, subject to the assumption of the dominant energy condition. An outstanding open problem in classical general relativity and relativistic astrophysics is to determine the final fate of the continual gravitational collapse o...
